DVD Review: QUEENSRYCHE – Mindcrime at the Moore Blu Ray

Queensryche

Mindcrime at the Moore Blu Ray DVD

Eagle Vision/Rhino

9 out of 10

In the new digital age of music, where bands have to live on the road to make money and survive due to low album sales and large labels taking bigger and bigger cuts of the percentages from the bands, there are a few bands that have taken their live shows to new levels.

Queensryche is one of those bands. Knowing that in today’s market it is harder and harder to sell tickets and ‘get asses in seats’ the band has taken several original approaches to their live shows in recent years. A few years ago they toured and performed Operation: Mindcrime, their rock opera if you will, in its entirety. Then in preparation for releasing Operation: Mindcrime II they toured again performing Part I in its entirety but this time with actors, more video, and actual surround sound.

With the release of Mindcrime II they once again hit the road, and one upped themselves by performing both albums in their entirety with actors, et al. And in their hometown of Seattle Washington at the Moore Theater they filmed the event and released it on DVD.

Eagle Vision has taken that DVD and high definition film and has released the Blu Ray version of it four years later. This is Queensrÿche’s first Blu Ray release, and it couldn’t be a better place to start.

Everyone knows the storyline for Mindcrime right? I don’t have to go into the premise about Nikki being a heroin user, who is approached by Dr. X to become an assassin for ‘The Cause’. And through his handler Sister Mary who is a nun that used to be a prostitute, who is also hooked on the horse, and ‘takes care’ of Nikki and his needs; he gets his fixes and his release, and love. After a few missions, Dr. X tells Nikki to kill Mary, and that’s when the story takes a turn. Mary dies and Nikki is arrested for the crime. Only according to Nikki he didn’t do it, or at least doesn’t remember doing it.

The album ends with Nikki in an insane asylum trying to remember what happened, and to piece together how Mary died and who did it. Oh look, I DID go into the premise. My bad. The original Mindcrime album was released in 1988 and was originally performed in its entirety on the second leg of the Empire Tour in the early 90’s. Which was released on VHS tape at the time.

If you think you’ve seen Operation: Mindcrime live, and you haven’t seen the full production with actors, then you haven’t seen Operation: Mindcrime done correctly. The answer to who killed Mary is finally answered, the musical interludes between songs tie the entire production together, and the actors add a nice touch instead of detracting from the music. One drawback I see is that there is an actor for Nikki who comes out on stage and interacts with Mary and others, and then when Geoff Tate is singing as Nikki, he interacts with Mary, etc, and can be a little distracting at times. Either he is Nikki or the actor is Nikki, having both of them be Nikki can be confusing at times if you don’t understand the story that well to begin with.

The sound, the imagery, the camera work, are all top notch and the Blu Ray treatment amps it up, and adds a certain intimacy to you being right there on stage or at the stage for the production.

The only other small complaint is that you have to watch the extras to see a song with Ronnie James Dio performing as Dr X. whom he sang all the parts for on Operation: Mindcrime II. It would have been nice to see him in the full production. So there is more consistency from the first album to the second.

That and the fact that the second Operation: Mindcrime is far inferior to the first one are the reasons that this great DVD got a 9 out of 10.

Again, we have two complete albums performed in their entirety, with actors and production, we have one of the best ‘rock operas’ ever recorded performed live and in thunderous 5.1 surround sound, and most importantly we actually, unequivocally, with no room for interpretation, find out what happened to Mary. This alone is worth the price of the DVD to me, as I was wrong in what I thought happened to her for the last 17 years.

Fans of Queensryche will eat up this DVD, and if you were a fan of Operation: Mindcrime then you’ll absolutely love watching it performed in this manner.

QUEENSRYCHE’s Mindcrime At The Moore set for Blu-Ray release on October 18th

by on Oct.03, 2011, under news

Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the October 18 release of Queensrÿche: Mindcrime At The Moore — the first Queensrÿche Blu-Ray ever.

Filmed in front of the band’s hometown crowd in Seattle over three nights in 2006, the story of Nikki, as originally told on two albums—1988’s Operation: Mindcrime and 2006’s Operation: Mindcrime II —is the story of one of the most enigmatic characters in the history of Progressive Rock. Nikki’s a junkie, a political revolutionary and an assassin. His relationships with Sister Mary and the manipulative Dr. X form the backbone of a complex tale that is told at the Moore Theater with actors, staging and film.

Three hours long, recorded in DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby Digital 5.1, with three bonus extras—a tour documentary, a version of “The Chase” from Los Angeles with Ronnie James Dio as Dr. X, and “Queensrÿche Rock’n’Ride” (a documentary on the band’s charity motorcycle event)—Mindcrime At The Moore is a high-definition knock-out of a disc that fully presents this mammoth stage production the way it was meant to be told. The band—vocalist Geoff Tate, drummer Scott Rockenfield, bassist Eddie Jackson and guitarists Michael Wilton/Mike Stone—are augmented by Pamela Moore as Sister Mary and the aforementioned Dio who only performed as Dr. X that one time and was shown on film for the rest of the tour.

The 32-song concert ends with an additional two-song encore of fan favorites “Jet City Woman” and “Walk In The Shadows.” The two critically acclaimed Mindcrime albums have sold over two million copies in North America alone.

RAINBOW Live In Germany 1976 two-CD to be released on August 23rd

by on Aug.14, 2011, under news

The eight-song concert is the definitive early onstage statement of a great band whose personnel shape-shifted through the years. This particular lineup is looked upon as the primo Rainbow assemblage. Lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore had left Deep Purple in 1975 to concentrate on a more personalized version of his vision, and did just that with legendary vocalist Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010), drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboardist Tony Carey. (This lineup only recorded one album together: Rising, a landmark in British Rock.)

Performing flawlessly on elongated jam-happy versions of “Kill The King,” “Mistreated,” “Sixteenth Century Greensleeves,” “Catch The Rainbow” (disc #1), “Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Stargazer,” “Still I’m Sad” and “Do You Close Your Eyes” (disc #2), Blackmore fulfilled his every expectation. Filled with startling guitar solos and massive Dio lung power, Live In Germany 1976 is a band in full control of their capabilities.

Live In Germany 1976 has all the elements, showcasing a band truly immeasurable in their talent and musical abilities. One can only wonder what kind of magic could have been produced had this lineup stayed together.

DVD Review: HEAVEN & HELL – Radio City Music Hall Live

HEAVEN & HELL

Radio City Music Hall Live

Eagle Vision

10 out of 10

On March 30th, 2007 Heaven & Hell (Tony Iommi, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice) took the stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The band performed for over 2 hours to a sold out rabid crowd. On May 15th Eagle Rock Entertainment released the Blu Ray edition of this 15 song extravaganza that not only showcases the might and the power of Heaven & Hell but is a touching tribute to Ronnie James Dio who passed away a year ago succumbing to cancer.

The concert itself is enough reason to purchase this amazing DVD. I mean what really needs to be said about Heaven & Hell performing such killer songs as Mob Rules, Lady Evil, Computer God, Fallin’ Off The Edge of The World, Heaven And Hell, Neon Knights, and Sign Of The Southern Cross?

Do I really need to go into how amazing Dio’s voice is after all these years? How strong and powerful his singing still is? How for such a demure man, he stalks the stage and commands the crowd like a 50 foot giant? How skilled and spot on Tony’s playing is? How deft Geezer still is playing the jazzy hell out of the bass and still remaining criminally underrated as one of the most amazing bassists ever? Do I? Really? I mean it’s HEAVEN & HELL for fuck’s sake!!! Did you expect any less? Of course not.

What I can add to a stellar performance that is above critique is that the camera work, and High Definition conversion of this show is what puts it over the top. The lighting and stage production are brought to life on the Blu Ray disc. It’s as if you are standing right beside RJD himself and throwing the horns at the crowd.

The added features of the Blu Ray are simply icing on the cake as I’ve already said the show is a MUST HAVE for any Dio/Sabbath/Heaven & Hell/Heavy Metal/Music fan. From a behind the scenes look at the 2007 tour, to the in depth look at the chemistry of the four that make up Heaven & Hell, to a behind the scenes look at the Radio City Music Hall and Heaven & Hell’s fans.

The best piece of bonus material is ‘The Wisdom Of Dio’. Shot after Dio’s death, the interviews with the band about the man, the myth, the greatest voice in Metal, Ronnie James Dio is very touching, and a great testament to the man that everyone loved.

BLACK SABBATH’s Born Again deluxe expanded edition to be released May 30th

by on May.23, 2011, under news

Following the departure of lead singer Ronnie James Dio and drummer Vinnie Appice after the studio mixing of the Live Evil album, Black Sabbath were once again on the lookout for yet another lead vocalist to fill the significant void left at stage front. The band turned to ex-Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan.

The resultant album and live touring certainly made for one of the more curious associations in the world of heavy metal. Much of this era of Black Sabbath has passed into rock folklore and was actually the source for much of the material used in the rockumentary movie, This Is Spinal Tap. From the replica stage production of Stonehenge which was too large for some of the venues on the world tour to the employment of a dwarf to dress-up and play the part of the ‘devil-baby‘ from the LP front cover, the world of Black Sabbath took-on a distinct air of the surreal.

Whilst the well received Born Again album and live dates succeeded in stoking the embers and kept the Sabbath flames burning, this would ultimately be a marriage built more on friendship and respect as opposed to any long-standing and compatible musical association. After one tour, Ian Gillan would eventually bid farewell and re-join his old sparring partners for the Mk. II reunion of Deep Purple and leave Black Sabbath once more gazing into the crystal ball hoping the face of yet another lead vocalist would reveal itself.

For Iommi, Butler, Ward, Gillan, and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls, work would swiftly commence in May of ’83 at the Manor Studios in the village of Shiptonon-Cherwell, Oxfordshire. Produced by Black Sabbath and co-producer Robin Black, who had also worked on 1975′s Sabotage, 1976′s Technical Ecstasy, and 1978′s Never Say Die, Sabbath‘s eleventh studio release would represent a radical departure from the gloomy atmospherics and blackened lyricism that had forged their identity and spawned innumerable descendants.

Gillan‘s approach to song-writing bespoke a lighter-hearted approach to what had, until then, been the primary concern of Butler. Album-opener Trashed, for instance, was inspired by Gillan‘s boozed-up race around the Manor’s grounds in Bill Ward‘s car that ended in near-catastrophe and a wrecked vehicle. Disturbing The Priest was the result of a door in the studio having been left open during playback, and a local vicar appearing in the doorway asking for the volume to be turned down as it was disturbing choir practice in the adjacent village.

For all of its off-kilter appearance however, Born Again was still Sabbath through and through. Musically twisted and possessed with more than a whiff of brimstone, the album is a thrilling glimpse into an alternative world.

For this re-mastered Deluxe Expanded Edition, a second disc containing two bonus tracks is included, with ‘The Fallen‘ being a previously unreleased studio outtake recorded during the original album session. Also included are nine tracks from the BBC Friday Rock Show broadcast of Black Sabbath‘s appearance at the Reading Rock Festival in August 1983, which also includes a performance of Deep Purple‘s classic ‘Smoke On The Water‘.

The Born Again Deluxe Expanded Edition tracklisting is as follows:
Disc 1 (original album):
Trashed
Stonehenge
Disturbing The Priest
The Dark
Zero The Hero
Digital Bitch
Hot Line
Keep It Warm

Disc 2:

HeadCat (Lemmy, Slim Jim Phantom, Danny B. Harvey) to release Walk The Walk…Talk The Talk on July 5th

by on May.23, 2011, under news

Members of Motörhead, The Stray Cats, and Lonesome Spurs team up for new HeadCat release!

LEMMY KILMISTER (Motörhead), SLIM JIM PHANTOM (The Stray Cats) and DANNY B. HARVEY (Rockats, 13 Cats, Lonesome Spurs), have teamed up in a high-energy, “take no prisoners” combo to remind the world how real rock ‘n roll is supposed to fuckin sound. HeadCat serves up a delicious melting pot with flavors of rockabilly, punk, blues and undeniable rock ‘n roll!

HeadCat was formed in 2000 after recording an Elvis Presley tribute special to which all band members contributed. Slim Jim Phantom (drums, percussion), was born in Brooklyn and listened to his parents’ jazz records. At the age of ten he took up the drums although he always says that the drums chose him. He is an exceptional drummer who cemented his place among rock royalty long time ago and inspires and excites audiences worldwide.

Danny B. Harvey (guitar, piano) is Texas born and also discovered his love for music very early. He started playing the guitar at the age of six and even got a full scholarship to study classical guitar. He developed a finger picking guitar style that’s very unique and based on his idols Merle Travis and Chet Atkins but also a result of his classical-technique education.

Lemmy Kilmister (vocals, bass, harmonica) was born and raised in England and started to play the guitar at the age of sixteen. With a laughing eye he always said that he only took the guitar to impress the girls. He is an autodidact and changed early to bass as he stated he wasn’t a good guitar player. After founding Motörhead in 1975 he knows the ups and downs in the business and has reached the status of an Icon all over the world.

The new HeadCat album ‘Walk The Walk…Talk The Talk’ is due to be released July 5th, 2011 through Niji Entertainment Group, the record label Wendy Dio and her and late husband Ronnie James Dio formed before his untimely passing.

Twelve fantastic songs for ‘Walk The Walk, Talk The Talk’ were chosen easily. HeadCat prepare to take over the airwaves with their first single ‘American Beat‘. ‘American Beat’ is a song written in the studio - Lemmy had the words and the rest came together very quickly. ‘I Ain’t Never‘ is one of the songs Lemmy really likes and Danny knew it – a real country, rockabilly number, full of love and ready to take you drifting away. ‘Let It Rock‘ is one of their favorite Chuck Berry tunes – The Stones did it a lot in their live show in the 70′s – HeadCat plays a different version. ‘Something Else’ is a classic Eddie CochranLemmy came on stage with the Stray Cats and jammed on it at a show in the 90′s at Hammersmith Odeon so it came quite natural to take this on the record as well.

Walk The Walk…Talk The Talk‘ track listing confirmed as follows:
American Beat
Say Mama
I Ain’t Never
Bad Boy
Shaking All Over
Let It Rock
Something Else
The Eagle Flies On Friday
Trying To Get To You
You Can’t Do That
It’ll Be Me
Crossroads

RAINBOW to release deluxe 2 disc edition of Down To Earth

by on Dec.04, 2010, under news

From Gibson.com:

One of the great hard rock bands of the late ’70s/early ’80s, RAINBOW evolved over the course of its initial run (1975-1984) from a heavy sword-and-sorcery sound (helmed by RONNIE JAMES DIO) to a lighter, more commercial enterprise attuned to early ’80s FM playlists (with the Lou Gramm-esque JOE LYNN TURNER on vocals). Somewhere in between was an album called Down To Earth, which managed to dial up much of the hard rock fury of the Dio years, but with the dead-on pop sensibilities of the band’s later albums.

For Down To Earth, bandleader and axe-man extraordinaire RITCHIE BLACKMORE tapped GRAHAM BONNET to take the mic. With Bonnet’s stentorian vox, Blackmore’s fiery fretwork, monster drummer Cozy Powell, veteran keyboardist Don Airey and Ritchie’s old DEEP PURPLE mate Roger Glover on bass (and co-producer), the group created some of the best tracks in Rainbow’s long and winding history, including the singles ‘All Night Long‘ and the Russ Ballard-penned ‘Since You’ve Been Gone‘.

Now Universal Music has announced a deluxe expanded version of Down To Earth, with non-album B-sides ‘Bad Girl‘ and the atmospheric instrumental ‘Weiss Heim‘, as well as a second disc of studio outtakes and alternate versions, which lend much-appreciated context to the finished album.

It has also been reported that Universal will soon announce a release date for a similar deluxe edition for the album many consider to be the band’s masterpiece, Rainbow Rising.

Down To Earth: Deluxe Expanded Edition tracklisting:
Disc 1:
All Night Long
Eyes Of The World
No Time To Lose
Makin’ Love
Since You Been Gone
Love’s No Friend

Bonus Tracks:

Disc 2:

MIKE TRAMP streams Hymn To Ronnie online

by on Oct.04, 2010, under news

WHITE LION frontman Mike Tramp and his ROCK’N'ROLL CIRCUZ band have recorded a tribute song to the legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio — best known for his work with BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW and his own band DIO. According to a press release, the track, “clocking in at almost nine minutes, takes you through a magical journey of Ronnie James Dio‘s life, and you will be left breathless at the end. Those who have already heard the song call it the ultimate tribute ever.”

Tramp wrote and recorded “Hymn To Ronnie” while working on his new album, “2nd Act“, with ROCK’N'ROLL CIRCUZ. Tramp says that the track always needed to stand by itself and he never felt that he could include it in any form on a commercial album. According to a press release, “This song belongs to all of Ronnie’s fans; it’s not just a tribute, it’s a hymn, something much more sacred to fit the man with the true voice of rock’n'roll.”

The keyboards on Mike Tramp‘s Ronnie James Dio tribute track were laid down by original RAINBOW keyboardist Tony Carey. The song was recorded at Medley Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark by Søren Andersen and was mixed by Michael Voss at Kidroom Music in Germany.

Sprinkled with SABBATH and RAINBOW tracks “Heaven and Hell“, “Tarot Woman” and “Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll“, this Blu-ray is a shining statement of Dio‘s commanding, compassionate, and behemoth performances. An interview with the band is included as a bonus feature.

Holy Diver Live” is considered to be one of the most memorable performances of Ronnie James Dio‘s career. This Blu-ray is a pristine and fitting tribute to one of rock’s most beloved icons. His is a voice and presence that will be cherished and missed for generations to come.
