WARBRINGER’s Adam Carroll leaves, Andrew Bennett steps in

by on Jan.30, 2012, under news

As WARBRINGER begins their North American tour supporting ICED EARTH and SYMPHONY X this week, it has been revealed that longtime guitarist Adam Carroll has decided to leave the band and last weekend’s shows supporting DEATH ANGEL were his last.

To all fans and friends, I, Adam Carroll, have officially quit WARBRINGER. I have financial issues at home that have to be addressed sooner than later. I hope you all can understand and respect my decision. It’s been some of the best years of my life and I appreciate all the support you the fans have given us and continue to give. I will forever be part of the WARBRINGER family. Many thanks and until I see the rest of you again, keep the metal alive. Cheers!

The band enlisted friend and talented, young guitarist Andrew Bennett for the purpose of filling in live for this tour with the hope that he may become a permanent member of the group as he continues his audition process where it matters most– on the stage and in the van.

Comments Andrew Bennett, “Last month I received a message from the guys, which basically stated that Adam was requesting to step out. As a result, they were searching for a possible replacement who could learn the material in time for the upcoming ICED EARTH and SYMPHONY X tour. I jumped at the opportunity and started learning some tracks. Around the beginning of this month I went down and jammed with the guys and the rest is history. I am eternally grateful to my friends in WARBRINGER for giving me the opportunity to play with them and I am very excited about what the future may hold. But, one thing that I would like to make clear is that I don’t view myself as Adam’s replacement, as much as I view myself as filling the position instead of him. Adam‘s work with the band and time with them is not something that can be erased and I would just like to make it clear that I respect him greatly. He has left big shoes to fill and I have a lot of work ahead of me if I am going to honor his legacy with the band. I’m looking forward to interacting with, and playing for the fans on the road! It’s time to shred!

Guitar Tech & Tour Manager DANE WOLF needs our help

by on Oct.29, 2011, under news

Dane Wolf, known to many throughout the metal community as a skilled guitar tech, tour manager, and overall kind & hardworking human being, was badly beaten in Denver, Colorado last week while on the Death Angel/Testament/Anthrax tour. As a result, he had to drop off the tour and was recently released from the hospital in Denver.

Dane’s mother, Jenna Wolf, issued the following statement on Dane Wolf’s Give Forward fundraising page: “Please help in whatever way you can by assisting with his medical bills and upcoming travel expenses to and from Colorado when things go to court. There will be additional medical costs in the future as well, as he continues to recover and requires follow-up care. The goal has now been raised due to the amazing response of Dane’s friends and family. Thank you so much for your continued support, and for sharing the link, and his story!

The goal is to raise $7,500.00 to pay Dane’s medical & travel expenses. Thus far, $3,760 (50%) has been raised. YOU can help a metalhead who worked a metal tour you attended by visiting GiveForward.com/DANEWOLF and donate what you can. Every dollar helps!

Monday’s online update from Dane Wolf: “The doctor’s appt. went well today, and I have been deemed travel ready and will be finishing my recovery with my Mother who has been worried sick, and kitty cat in Saint Louis! I leave on my first flight in a few hours. My brain IS there, and looks alright :-) stitches come out in another week, chicks dig scars, right? I am trying a different pain medication to see if it can reduce side effects, as I am still battling major headaches as my fractures heal and the swelling subsides. I will be meeting with a specialist in Saint Louis to determine if I will require surgery to repair my orbital socket, fingers crossed. None of these options would have been available without your help, I am so grateful to spend the rest of my recovery with Mom, because we all know that no one takes care of you like mom does. The many positive actions this week so far outweigh the negative in my mind, that I can’t help but look forward to getting healed and paying it back to others. I will be back in The Bay with all you crazy fuckers when I’m fully Dane again, and back out on the road with my brothers and sisters when duty calls. Thanks to my Uncle Brad, cousin Brandon, doctors, nurses, police, and friends in Denver for watching over me :-) I will welcome seeing my Saint Louis friends as soon as my body tells me I’m ready to do so, as I will be strictly following doctor’s orders to give it the full opportunity to rest and recover as I have been. Thank you all, so much, once again.
Much Love
Dane

ANTHRAX’s Worship Music debuts on Billboard’s Top 200 Album at #12

by on Sep.22, 2011, under news

Worship Music“, (Megaforce) Anthrax‘s first studio album in eight years and its first with vocalist Joey Belladonna since 1990′s “Persistence of Time,” blasts onto next week’s Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #12, the band’s highest chart debut in two decades, and second-highest in its career, selling 28,500 copies.

And if that’s not enough, “Worship Music” debuted at #4 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Chart, #3 on the Hard Music Core Chart, and #2 at both the Indie and Indie Core Stores charts.

I am most proud of our fans who came out and gave us the amazing support they did,” said Anthrax‘s Charlie Benante. “To have our record debut at #12 is a great accomplishment.”

Added the band’s Scott Ian, “I’m absolutely thrilled with the fact that our Anthrax Army came out in force this week to show the world that good music matters. Thank you to all our friends, old and new! It’s a privilege to do this for you.

While the recording of “Worship Music” was challenging and at some times difficult, it was at the core of an extraordinary experience for a band that had questioned its very future. Anthrax‘s turning point took place in 2009 at a Cleveland hotel bar with Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich when he first brought up the idea of The Big Four. That led to Anthrax‘s decision to get Belladonna back in the band on a permanent basis, and to the complete refashioning of the previously-recorded tracks for “Worship Music” with Belladonna‘s inimitable vocal stamp. Pre-release reviews of “Worship Music” hailed the album as not only a career-best for Anthrax, but “the metal album of the year,” and last week’s New York homecoming concert at Yankee Stadium as one of the original architects of speed and thrash metal with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth - The Big Four – only added to Anthrax‘s remarkable renewal.

Anthrax hits the road beginning October 14 on a five-week, coast-to-coast tour with Testament and Death Angel.

Upcoming ANTHRAX dates:
10/14 Grand Rapids, MI @ The Orbit Room
10/15 Chicago, IL @ Congress Theater
10/16 Minneapolis, MN @ First Avenue

ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT, & DEATH ANGEL announce US tour

by on Sep.06, 2011, under news

Thrash titans ANTHRAX and TESTAMENT, who haven’t toured together in more than a decade, are set to co-headline a U.S. tour beginning Friday, October 14 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. ANTHRAX will close all shows, and DEATH ANGEL will be main support for the entire tour. The coast-to-coast trek will figure to decimate more than two dozen cities over a five-week period, with both ANTHRAX and DEATH ANGEL debuting brand new material from their new albums. The ANTHRAX fan club presale begins today at www.anthraxarmy.com, and the public on-sale kicks off Friday, September 9 at 10 a.m. local time.

We’ve been tight with the guys in TESTAMENT for a long, long time,” said ANTHRAX‘s Charlie Benante, “so we’re really looking forward to hanging out with them on the road. And all of us in ANTHRAX are big DEATH ANGEL fans, so this is going to be a monster of a good time — for all of us and for the fans. Plus, with the incredible success of The Big Four shows over the last year, we wanted to tour with some of the ‘second wave’ of thrash bands.

The tour will follow ANTHRAX‘s Big Fourhometown” appearance at Yankee Stadium on September 14, with METALLICA, SLAYER and MEGADETH.

We’re excited to do this tour because ANTHRAX was actually the first band we ever toured with,” adds TESTAMENT vocalist Chuck Billy. “It’s an accomplishment 20 odd years later that we’re going to do it again. The tour kick-off date is actually about five days difference from the kick off date of the first tour 20 years ago. The first time we performed with ANTHRAX, we only had a total of ten songs, so obviously now we have many songs to pick from so it will be very different. It’s good to see that a lot of the faces in the bands are the same as back when we first did this original tour 20 years ago.

ANTHRAX / TESTAMENT / DEATH ANGEL fall 2011 tour dates:
Oct. 14 – Orbit Room, Grand Rapids, MI
Oct. 15 – Congress Theatre, Chicago, IL
Oct. 16 – First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN

Oct. 19 – Summit Music Hall, Denver, CO

DEATH ANGEL to release new DVD Death Angel: A Thrashumentary in 2012

by on Mar.24, 2011, under news

Bay Area thrash legends DEATH ANGEL will release their brand new DVD entitled DEATH ANGEL: A Thrashumentary in the Spring of 2012. See a special 12 minute trailer at this year’s Heavy Metal Film Festival, to take place in Los Angeles on March 31st through April 2nd 2011.

DEATH ANGEL: A Thrashumentary is a combination live video and documentary, all wrapped up in one thrashing DVD. The footage was directed by Tommy Jones (SOILWORK, KATAKLYSM) and mixed by Chris Clancy of The Studio. The film gives the viewer an in-depth look into one of the longest running thrash acts out of the San Francisco Bay Area, an area known for turning out historic thrash bands such as METALLICA, TESTAMENT and EXODUS.

With the band surviving a span of 30 years of activity, and nearly 25 years since the release of the classic album The Ultra-Violence, now was the time to tell the story. Filmed on the “Relentless Retribution” world tour, the film shows the bands energetic live performance, cut with documentary style interview footage. “Fly-on-the-wall” filming of the band talking about their career and footage of the band on the road, give the viewer a personal connection to what is known as the mighty DEATH ANGEL.

DEATH ANGEL recently announced their tour of South East Asia! Confirmed dates are as follows:
April 30 – Manila, PHILIPPINES (Pulp Summer Slam w/ ANTHRAX, HELLYEAH)

DEATH ANGEL 2011-01-30 Volume 11 Tavern Raleigh, NC

by on Feb.03, 2011, under photos, reviews

DEATH ANGEL kicked off their NORTH AMERICAN RETRIBUTION TOUR 2011 with EARLY MAN, BONDED BY BLOOD, LAZARUS A.D. and HEXEN Sunday January 30th in Raleigh, NC at Volume 11 Tavern. The first night of their headlining tour didn’t go off without a few hiccups though. Early Man and Hexen didn’t make the show, so two local bands, Blatant Disarray and Gross Reality stepped up and opened the show. Then at the last minute Bonded by Blood apparently had some kind of accident and flipped their trailer on the way to the show, so they didn’t make it either. All was well in the Lazarus A.D. camp and they made the show and performed a solid set.
But, I was there to see Death Angel. It has been a few years since we’ve gotten a headlining show out of them so I was very excited to finally get a full set from them again, and the boys from the Bay Area did not disappoint.
Every album was represented in the set list I believe and the band evenly spread out their set with old and new stuff for us.
The highlights for me was a great version of Veil Of Deception, Bored, and a quick opening from ULTRA VIOLENCE.
The band is tight, Mark‘s voice is spot on, and they looked like they were having a blast on stage. It’s been way too long since the band toured properly for an album and hopefully this tour will be successful enough for them to continue to do so in the future. I’m telling you DEATH ANGEL has never sounded better. So do yourself a favor and regardless of who is opening for them on this tour…. GO SEE THEM. You’ll thank me later.

LAZARUS A.D. release single The Ultimate Sacrifice off Black Rivers Flow

by on Jan.09, 2011, under news

Wisconsin metallers LAZARUS A.D. are pleased to announce the release of their first single, “The Ultimate Sacrifice”, via MySpace and YouTube after having premiered it exclusively this past week on SiriusXM’s Liquid Metal. ”The Ultimate Sacrifice” can be heard now on metalblade.com/lazarusad with pre-order packages coming soon! LAZARUS A.D.’s highly anticipated upcoming album, Black Rivers Flow, was recorded in July and August 2010 at Belle City Sound with Chris Djuricic and was mixed and mastered by James Murphy at Safehouse Production.

Track listing for Black Rivers Flow:
American Dreams
The Ultimate Sacrifice
The Strong Prevail
Black Rivers Flow
Casting Forward
Light A City (Up In Smoke)
Through Your Eyes
Beneath the Waves of Hatred
Eternal Vengeance

First off, I have to say we are incredibly proud of Black Rivers Flow,” states bassist and vocalist Jeff Paulick. “It’s been three and a half years since we recorded our last album and we’ve grown a lot since then. During the writing process for Black Rivers Flow we were dealing with great personal tragedies. We found a way to draw strength from those tragedies and use it as inspiration to write what we feel is an incredibly more sound record than the last. On Black Rivers Flow, everyone stepped up their game; the riffs are heavier, the choruses catchier, and the vocals have improved and been diversified tenfold. We are on a mission to show the world that we are a force to be reckoned with and aren’t thinking about a trend, we’re thinking long term. I think our fans will hear these songs and be blown away. The energy and power this time around is undeniable, and we hope the reaction amongst the community reflects just that.

LAZARUS A.D. are set to tour the U.S. this winter on the North American Retribution Tour alongside thrash metal legends Death Angel. Joining the tour will be Early Man, Bonded by Blood, and Hexen.

SLIM JIM’s Top Ten List Of 2010

by on Dec.16, 2010, under editorials, reviews

Slim Jim’s Top Ten of 2010

SHOOTER JENNINGSBlack Ribbons
The 70’s big classic rock – ball trippin’ – brain smokin’ – ear melting heavy tuneage of old is not dead. Shooter Jennings has created the heaviest album of 2010. In pure sonic fury, huge epicness, and massive songwriting. This isn’t Outlaw Country, This isn’t your daddy’s classic rock, this is Shooter Jennings and Hierophant (his band) racing along your brainwaves, fucking with all you thought you knew about music, and tainting what may come in the future. Take a little WHITE STRIPES, sprinkle some MUSE, add a dash of BLACK KEYS, smoke it with some Pink Floyd and dose repeatedly with Shooter himself, and you’ll get Black Ribbons. While the music will kick your ass, the lyrics will fuck with your brain, and the whole experience will make you think this whole fucked up industry could simply be saved if they’d just put out more solid music like this. This album should propel Shooter into Arenas and onto your grid faster than the clap takes hold of your sad tiny withered cock. But it seems the world would rather listen to the likes of sluts like Ke$ha, or 16 year old pubescent boys like Beiber than embrace the monster that is Shooter and Hierophant. WAKE UP people… If you haven’t experienced Black Ribbons… GO NOW. Do it here. You’ll thank me later. Oh, yes, Don’t Feed The Animals… And… FUCK YOU I’m FAMOUS. Did I mention there are 20 songs on this disc? 20! All of them will fuck with you, tie you in psychedelic knots and drip musical ecstasy semen out of your earholes. And don’t forget the indelible STEPHEN KING. Oh yeah, how could I forgot the title track Black Ribbons? It is quite simply the best Bruce Springsteen song that he never wrote.

ELEPAHNT MOUNTAINThe Last Days of Planet Earth
Joe Altier and Slider from BRAND NEW SIN reunite to form ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN. The best Southern tinged Hard Rock album of the last year or three, and they hail from SYRACUSE, NY! If you’ve heard of BRAND NEW SIN, and have heard their first two records, then you’ll know exactly what ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN sounds like. And you’ll love it. You can spread the herd here.

THE BLACK KEYSBrothers
Raw. Stripped. Deeper grooves than the ones fading on your wrist. Monochromed Stereophonically challenged. Bluesier than 20 quarts of Papa’s Jambalaya. More soulful than the most devout Methodist. The more I listen to this the more I want to go find all my ex’s. And slap the unloving chaos addicted shit out of them. The ultimate break up album. As it spins right now, I’m thinking it should move UP my top ten list. Fuck it. Ten Cent Pistol just reinforced the fact. And this is now my #3 best album of 2010 (As I originally wrote this, it was set at 7). You can join the Brothers here.

FILTER The Trouble with Angels
An amazing return for FILTER. Raw, punishing, beautiful. Read my original review here.

ACCEPTBlood of the Nations
Another reunion of sorts for ACCEPT. A new singer and a new lease on life. A great album that reminds us all why ACCEPT are Fast as a Shark. Read my original review here.

DISTRUBEDAsylum
More melodic than the past albums. More straight forward guitar solos than before. And more David Draiman. What more could you ask from a DISTURBED album? You can join the Asylum here.

SLASHSlash
Slash gets a bunch of singers to sing on his album instead of going around singing on theirs. Great songs, great singers like Myles Kennedy (ALTER BRIDGE), Lemmy (MOTORHEAD), Ian Astbury (THE CULT), Ozzy, Chris Cornell (AUDIOSLAVE, SOUNDGARDEN), and many more. The most notable standout track and singer is Fergie (FERGIE, BLACK EYED PEAS) on the track Beautiful Dangerous. The woman should be singing balls out Rock N Roll all the time, not this pop pap shit with BEP. She has a great voice and holds her own amongst the more traditional and legendary vocalists on this album. You can get Slashed here.

AVENGED SEVENFOLDNightmare
Never a big A7X fan. But after seeing them this year at the Rockstar Uproar Festival with Disturbed I found a new respect for them as a live band. I figured out my problem with the band. M. Shadows has a good voice, but as he sings about dark lyrics, and leads the crowd into chants of ‘fuck you’ his voice has a rather high range to it. Making the music seem lighter and more lilting than the lyrics therefore belying the heaviness of the music. At times making it seem rather jokish or tongue in cheek. However after seeing their amazing performance live, I now get it. And can move past the vocal issue. The album is their best by far. Blazing guitars you’ve come to expect, full stream riffs crunch and chunk along getting your head and feet involved tapping along. Definitely deserving of anyone’s top ten list. You can become the Nightmare here.

EXODUS Exhibit B: The Human Condition
EXODUS simple continues to pummel you into submission with their latest album. It is the fourth album in their return that does not fail to impress. The one drawback may simply be Rob Dukes‘ dry vocal style. But the brutal beating that you endure while listening to the album more than makes up for the lack of dimensions in his voice. Albums 6 – 10 will continue to beat the ever loving fuck out of your brain and spleen. I have no doubts about this. The band has never sounded better, tighter, or more focused than here. Which can only mean great things on the horizon for us fans. You can witness the Human Condition here.

DEATH ANGELRelentless Retribution
Any year is a good year when DEATH ANGEL releases a new album. The most important part of this is that the band promises to tour endlessly for this release. So that means we get more live Death Angel than ever before. And this boys and girls is a good thing. You can read my original review here.
