I first became interested in BLUE OCTOBER in 2007 after I listened to their 2006 release, Foiled. A part of the genre I don’t usually find myself having a gravitation towards. But some of the music and some of the lyrics had me intrigued. So when I knew I would be afforded the opportunity to photograph Blue October, and review their performance, I was thrilled.
The night at The Pullo Performimg Arts Center began with an acoustic performance by singer songwriter Justin Furstenfeld. It was a 25 minute solo set that included heartfelt, personal lyrics entwined with guitar and an electronically created drum beat that seems to have shed some light to the audience what Justin had experienced in his past. Meaningful and passionate peppered with jokes and laughter lent itself to a very intimate connection with a man so instrumental in leading BLUE OCTOBER.
Next up was GIRL IN A COMA. I really had not listened to any of this trio’s music prior to their set. These women started right out of the gate with hard rocking tunes that had decent riffs and hooks. Hard rocking and edgy, they proved that the audience should take them seriously as rockers. The growls of front woman Nina Diaz, the rupturing bass guitar of Jenn Alva and the drums of Phanie Diaz makes this lineup from San Antonio impressive. The crowd seem to really dig them.
The real treat was about to begin with the 90 minute set from BLUE OCTOBER. Kicking off the night with “She’s My Ride Home” from the successful 2006 release of Foiled got the crowd to their feet quickly. And singing along. Next up was “Say It” from the 2009 release of Approaching Normal and “Sound Of Pulling Heaven Down” also from Foiled. The lights stayed dimmed but the musicians shined brightly with every chord and every word. If Justin had been demure and awkward during his solo set he certainly did an about face as he slid right into the
charismatic frontman he is known to be.
The crowd seemed to be quite familiar with most of BLUE OCTOBER’s catalog of songs. Singing more loudly as the set progressed. Most of the setlist contained songs from 3 releases; Foiled, Approaching Normal, and the newest release from the fall of 2011 Any Man In America. The biggest hits of the night, and most popular with the crowd, were “Into The Ocean” and “Hate Me”. The crowd was delighted and sang along very loudly. Very happily they showed their enthusiasm and the band fed right from that energy. BLUE OCTOBER are one of those bands that seem to have somewhat of a cult following. Sometimes being viewed as an acquired taste.

I want to give a big shout out to Tim Tatulli of RED Music for making this opportunity happen for me and the Away-Team. Thanks!
South Carolina’s own ISABELLE’S GIFT have released their first official video for the lead track off their recently released Possession With Intent entitled Million Dollar Joke.
Away-Team reviewed the album and you can see why we gave it 8 out of 10 and why we said that while it is early in the year, this may be the album to beat for Album of the Year (it will most certainly be in our top two or three by years end easily). You can read our review here.

March 27th, 2012- While the band name Flying Colors might be unfamiliar to you, the members of this rock supergroup have individually sold millions of records and strong fan base around the world. Flying Colors’ self-titled debut album is released today through Music Theories/Mascot Label Group/MRI.
The members of Flying Colors are drummer Michael Portnoy (Dream Theater,) guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple,) vocalist Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev,) Neal Morse (keyboards,) and Dave LaRue (bass.) Flying Colors marks Portnoy’s first project since he departed Dream Theater.
The seeds of Flying Colors’ formation were sown in 2008, when executive producer Bill Evans brought the idea to each of the musicians as well as to producer Peter Collins. Intrigued by the idea of working together, the four musicians wrote and recorded this album in just nine days.
Portnoy says “This album has bits and pieces of what you’d expect from each of us. The sum of all it’s parts led to brand new, uncharted territory for everyone involved.”
Dave LaRue says “It was quite an experience. The band moved at a fast pace, ideas flying around the room at all times. Sections of tunes were arranged, then rearranged. Ideas were tried every which way until we made them work, or in some cases, discarded them altogether. Just keeping track of everything was a challenge! It’s been an inspiring challenge melding folk, prog, pop and metal all into one big recording.”

Minneapolis, MN- Rock band 3 Pill Morning has signed with New York based A2Z / Page2 Music distributed via eOne, the largest independent music and video distribution company in North America. 3 Pill Morning shares eOne’s rock roster with acts like Bush, Pop Evil, Anew Revolution and more.
“The music industry is tough and constantly changing and we’ve worked hard to stay on the road and continue to get on people’s radar however we can. We are very excited for the payoff to many years of hard work and the next big step in our musical careers. 5/18/12 Lansing, MI Uli’s Haus Of Rock
5/19/12 Battle Creek, MI Planet Rock
5/22/12 New York, NY Irving Plaza w/ SLASH
Brand New Sin has risen to new levels with their latest recording, and is ready to unleash the disenfranchised roar of UNITED STATE, released October 11, 2011 (US) and October 31, 2011 (Europe) on Goomba Music. The enduring trio of Kris Wiechmann (Vocals/Guitar), Chuck Kahl (Bass), and Kevin Dean (Drums) are joined by the new blood of Tommy Matkowski on lead guitar. Tommy’s playing is truly the finishing piece to this already powerful puzzle, lending a fresh and deeply rooted hard rock style to the Brand New Sin sound. This line-up spent much of 2010 on the road together defining the terms of United State, including opening shows for Slash & Myles Kennedy. UNITED STATE expands on their 2009 independent release, Distilled, delivering some of the most accomplished and self-defining tracks of the band’s career. It’s clear that the lyrics of these autobiographical songs resonate in the state of mind of so many today. UNITED STATE is a time capsule of the struggle to survive and overcome in our current society. Many of the songs are about self-reflection. Wiechmann taps into the psyche of the masses: the moments that define each of us. “Infamous” and “Elbow Grease” animate the thoughts of a listener pondering their own past. The rage of songs like “Goddess Of War” and “Bed Of Nails” call out those that try and take advantage of the plight of others, while the anthemic “All My Wheels” tells a story of the struggle to live life never looking back, never regretting, uncompromised. UNITED STATE sees a determined and confident Brand New Sin voicing the rage of the world, through fiercely developed statements in lyrics, riffs, and powerfully crafted guitar solos, backed by a driving rhythm section that continues to define strength
JANUS- ‘Nox Aeris’
REALID Records/Warner ILG
Rating: 9 out of 10
Reviewed By: Jay Rybak
The first time I heard the single ‘Eyesore’ from Janus’ 2009 debut Red Right Return, I became an instant fan. Needless to say I had been impatiently awaiting the latest offering from the Chicago based rockers… and good things come to those who wait, very good things. For those of you unfamiliar with Janus, think 10 Years meets Filter. The perfect blend of melodic, yet heavy, with a hint of electronic.
As evidenced by the first single ‘Stains’, ‘Nox Aeris’ is that quintessential Janus album, yet with this offering there is one thing that really stood out to me. Not to detract from the great talents that comprise the rest of the band, but Johnny Salazar is a phenomenal drummer. You get a little taste in the first track ‘In Flames’, but the cymbal-crashing, double-bass smorgasbord ‘Stray’ is a glaring example, with the track that follows, ‘Numb’, serving as a delicious dessert.
Pair this newfound respect for Salazar, with the shredding of Mike Tyranski, and the vocal prowess of David Scotney and the stars align. The band as a whole clicks on all cylinders in the heavy hitters ‘A Promise To No One’ and ‘Polarized’, my two favorite tracks off the album, and two more reasons why ‘Nox Aeris’ is in constant rotation in this writer’s playlist, and should be in yours.
To put it simply, if Duran Duran got massive testicular implants, and broke onto the scene in 2012, the result would be ‘Nox Aeris’. This album is a must have and comes very highly recommended.
‘Nox Aeris’ is available now on iTunes, and hits stores Tuesday, March 27th. For more info on Janus, including tour dates and to purchase music, visit the band’s official website.

Flagday Productions has announced that production has begun on a documentary that will chronicle the life, successes and struggles of seminal rock & roll icon Mark Farner; an undeniable American rock star and founding member of the legendary band Grand Funk Railroad. Farner, who wrote the majority of the music and performed some of the most-ubiquitous radio hits of the past four decades, continues to perform worldwide.
The film project, dubbed “I’m Your Captain – The Mark Farner Story”, is inspired by the life of a man who
ascended the highest pinnacle of stardom in his early 20’s, dominated the international music scene for 10 years,
became a passionate advocate for Native American issues, military veterans, and the rights of American workers,
and along the way became a husband (married 34 years), inventor and devoted father.
Breaking the Beatles record, in 1971, for the fastest ticket sell-out at NY’s historic Shea Stadium (72 hours) , Mark Farner and Grand Funk Railroad sold millions of albums, releasing 13 albums between 1969 and 1983, and recording huge hits like “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”, “The Loco-Motion”, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “Bad Time”, “Heartbreaker” “Foot Stompin’ Music” and “We’re an American Band.”
In 2010, Farner’s youngest son, Jesse, became quadriplegic in a tragic summer accident. That instant refocused Farner’s boundless passion and energy to ignite his music career, and along with wife Lesia, has launched a crusade to care and provide for his son. This touching and ironic twist in the life of a man who’s had almost everything gives dramatic perspective and depth to the film and transforms what could have been just another Rock & Roll retrospective into a rich exploration of circumstances that any of us may encounter in life.
Award-winning film maker and director, Vincent Straggas, will weave Farner’s story using archival and new performance footage, interviews with Farner, his family, friends, former band mates and others, along with cinema verite footage of the Farner’s as they manage their day-to-day lives both at home and on the road.
“This is a rich story – this is not your typical rockumentary”, Straggas stresses, “I didn’t want to produce that kind of movie. This is a story about a man that has many layers. Once I heard Mark’s story I knew I had to make this film. It’s about his family, and his fans and the people he touches all over the world. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised and inspired by this film. Mark proves that passion is ageless, the director wagers, put any kid up against him and my money’s on Mark.”
Release details will be forthcoming, but a September 2013 date has been tentatively set to commemorate Farner’s 65th birthday and over 40 years as a professional musician. “I’m Your Captain – The Mark Farner Story” will be a feature length film and released theatrically, showing at film festivals worldwide prior to airing on PBS nationwide.
Flagday Productions is welcoming individuals who would like to invest in the production of this film. Contributors may provide funding through a variety of pledge levels in exchange for “perks”, including signed memorabilia, concert tickets, rock n’ roll gear, personal visits with the star, and other unique swag made here in the USA. Investors are welcome and may request special terms. Those interested should contact Executive Producer Joanne Codi, of Stellar Entertainment Group, at 781.526.4252, or email: firstname.lastname@example.org, or alternatively visit the film’s indiegogo fundraising website established for that purpose.

CRUCIFIED BARBARA, Sweden’s hardest rocking quartet, have signed a record deal with Nuclear Blast for North America (U.S., Canada, and México) plus New Zealand & Australia.
“We’re really proud of our new album and so incredibly happy that Nuclear Blast will release it!” states the band. “They’ve always worked with the coolest bands and now all of a sudden, we’re one of them. This is the beginning of a long, hard rockin’ friendship!”
Formed in Stockholm in 1998 by bassist Ida Evileye and guitarist Klara Force, CRUCIFIED BARBARA play a fiery brand of rock ‘n’ roll tinged with metal and lashings of punk, pop, thrash, and whatever else dares to cross their path. Ida Evileye dominates her trusty Sandberg bass, Klara Force rocks steady on her ’76 Gibson Explorer, Mia Coldheart belts out her unapologetic vocals while riffing all over her Gibson Gothic Flying V, and Nicki Wicked pounds on her hot pink sparkle Yamaha Maple drum kit until you’re splayed across the floor with a bull’s-eye knock-out punch that’ll make you spit your teeth out. Now you know what happens when Motörhead mates with The Runaways.
No strangers to hard work or success, CRUCIFIED BARBARA’s debut single from their 2005 debut In Distortion We Trust climbed to #8 on the Swedish pop charts. They played Australia, toured across Europe opening for Motörhead, Sepultura, In Flames, and Doro, and earned a prestigious slot alongside Black Sabbath, Velvet Revolver, and System Of A Down at the U.K. Download Festival. With all that touring, it would be four years before the band got around to recording their second album, 2009’s ‘Til Death Do Us Party. Next thing you know, there they were on national television performing in Eurovision’s 2010 Song Contest and made it to the semi-finals. Go figure.
So how did they get their name? The band members attended Denmark’s legendary Roskilde Festival and came across something very unexpected in a nearby forest: a blow-up doll (generically called “Barbara” throughout Sweden) attached to a crucifix. And no, they didn’t identify with the victim, they claimed the power of the aggressor right on the spot and have never looked back.
CRUCIFIED BARBARA’s third studio release, The Midnight Chase, will be released in North America this summer. The album was recorded at the legendary Music-A-Matic Vintage Recording Studio in Gothenberg with sound engineer Henryk Lipp and producer Chips Kiesby.
“Into The Fire,” the single off CRUCIFIED BARBARA’s upcoming third album The Midnight Chase, is available for streaming & download on the band’s official website.
