SOR_NAD_CoverSaints Of Rebellion – New American Dream - High Volume Music

Reviewed By – Craig “Bam-Bam” Stegall

 Rating – 8 Out Of 10

It’s always great to see the 80′s influenced hard=rockers making a go at the ring 20-years after their relevance has come and gone.  That said, this is not a smoke screen to promote the music I love most in this world, it’s simply an FYI for those who still give a shit, which, to my current knowledge, would include every writer on-staff here at Away-Team and quite a few more fans who continue to pay prime prices to go see KISS, Foreigner, Styx and even Whitesnake and a few other hair variety bands who still seem to make a living touring and pimping their wares.

So, with bands like TNT, Tiger Tailz, Danger-Danger and Bulletboys making a run for the stages that will allow them these days, Saints Of Rebellion finds a nice, cozy place in my iTunes library currently based on the strength of Love/Hate inspired tracks like “Gasoline”, “Get You Some”, and “30 And A 5th”.  Sliding easily between G’N’R melodic brilliance mixed with modern day HINDER-meets-Black Stone Cherry (two of my FAVORITE bands out these days), the aforementioned “Get You Some” is probably my favorite track of the bunch, but I’m here to tell you, there’s no better album to spin while you’re throwing back a few Buds in the backyard during the neighborhood Barbecue!  SOR are pretty cool looking dudes that don’t look like old fucks trying to keep the flag flying, on the contrary, they are pretty young looking dudes with a cool look to them which ups the level a few notches for me to being with.

Stand-out tracks are definitely “Get You Some”, ” Wine, Women And Song”, “30 And A 5th” and “Rise”.  The whole album stands head and shoulders above their counterparts like CrashDiet and even Blackberry Smoke.  An incredibly solid first effort from a band I think we’ll be hearing a lot about over the coming months. Highly Recommended!

Soundtrack Of Summer Tour 2014According to TMZ.com, and verified by the bands publicists, two tour buses on the Soundtrack Of Summer Tour featuring STYX, Foreigner, and Don Felder caught fire Wednesday afternoon in Philly.  The buses were parked and unoccupied when one of them burst into flames and the fire quickly spread to the second bus.  The buses in question were “crew buses” and not “band buses”, and no one was injured in the blaze.  The bands still plan to play their scheduled show on Thursday night in Camden, NJ.

Soundtrack Of Summer Tour 2014April 23, 2014 – Responsible for some of Rock’s most indelible summer anthems, legendary groups FOREIGNER and STYX will release THE SOUNDTRACK OF SUMMER on May 6 to coincide with their highly anticipated tour of the same name, which also features very special guest DON FELDER, former guitarist of The Eagles. The album, which features 16 classics by both bands, will be available exclusively at Walmart. Pre-orders are available on Walmart’s website.

THE SOUNDTRACK OF SUMMER package includes FOREIGNER hits “Cold As Ice,” “Juke Box Hero” and “I Want To Know What Love Is,” and STYX hits “The Grand Illusion,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Renegade” (see below for a complete track listing). The collection finishes with the spectacular highlight, a brand new interpretation of one of Classic Rock’s most successful songs ever, “Hotel California.” Original songwriter DON FELDER teamed up with STYX and FOREIGNER for this very special collaboration, as well as a stunning new version of FOREIGNER’s massive hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” which will only be available as a limited edition vinyl disc and on iTunes.

Fans can check out an exclusive stream of “Hotel California” on USA Today’s website, which went live earlier today.

STYX is one of the most beloved rock bands on the planet, with more than 30 million records sold in North America alone. Spawned from a Chicago basement in the early ‘70s, STYX would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late ’70s and early ’80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads. Over the course of their 38-year career they’ve released 15 studio albums, six best-of compilations and four live albums, garnering eight Top Ten singles. Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Chuck Panozzo, Lawrence Gowan, Ricky Phillips and Todd Sucherman have been together longer than any other lineup in the band’s 40-year existence.

With ten multi-platinum albums and sixteen Top 30 hits, FOREIGNER is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales, now exceeding 75 million. Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems, FOREIGNER continues to rock the charts more than thirty years into the game, Foreigner is led by founding member Mick Jones (guitar), and Kelly Hansen (lead vocals), Jeff Pilson (bass, vocals), Michael Bluestein (keyboards), Tom Gimbel (rhythm guitar, sax, vocals), Bruce Watson (guitar) and Chris Frazier (drums).

DON FELDER–former guitarist of the Eagles, New York Times best-selling author and four-time Grammy® Award winner—released his second solo album (and first since 1983), “Road To Forever” in October 9, 2012 and has been on tour throughout the U.S. ever since. The album has recently been re-released with four additional songs, “Road To Forever: Extended Edition,” on March 4 via INGrooves Music Group. The album’s latest single, “You Don’t Have Me,” is currently bulleted at #3 on the Mediabase Classic Rock chart. “Road To Forever” originally debuted on Billboard’s “Heatseekers” chart at #27. “Girls In Black,” the album’s first single, reached the Top 30 on the Mediabase Rock chart while the second single, “Wash Away,” co-written by FELDER and STYX’s Tommy Shaw and featuring Shaw’s signature vocal sound, quickly jumped to #4 on the Mediabase Classic Rock chart.

Rock To The Rescue LogoLos Angeles, CA &  Bloomington, IL (November 21, 2013) - In response to the recent wave of storms that brought tornadoes and highly-damaging winds to the Midwest, STYX and REO SPEEDWAGON have announced that they are using their combined might to help raise funds for those affected by this tragedy. On Dec. 4, these proud members of the Midwest’s rock elite will appear with special guests (to be announced shortly) at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Illinois in a fundraiser: Rock To The Rescue Extends A Hand To Those In Need. Funds will be earmarked for affected families in central Illinois communities that were left reeling in the wake of devastating tornadoes and winds. In order to maximize charitable proceeds, the artists, along with numerous vendors, crew and local staff, have generously forgone any personal compensation for the evening.

Tickets for this performance go on sale at www.ticketmaster.com for $58, $43 and $28 (tickets are subject to applicable service charges and event time and date are subject to change). Visit www.uscellularcoliseum.com for up-to-date information. Donations to Rock to the Rescue can be made here.

STYX guitarist and IL native James “JY” Young said, “As we approach the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, I’m reminded of his famous quote, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’ The good people of Illinois lent support and a helping hand to every artist on this bill at different times in their respective careers, and we owe a tremendous debt. It’s our turn to ask what we can do for this great State, and the best way we know to help those in need is to get on stage and let the incredible healing power of music play its part in rebuilding Illinois.”

REO SPEEDWAGON singer/guitarist Kevin Cronin said, “I am Illinois born and bred. REO Speedwagon is an Illinois band. The word ‘Illinois’ is music to me. The utter devastation and human suffering in Washington, IL and the surrounding areas is heartbreaking. I believe that we need to take care of our own… the people of Illinois are our own, and we are theirs.”

“With our company being based in this area for over 40 years and my family living in Pekin which was affected by the storm, we wanted to do something to help all those affected. Everyone at Jay Goldberg Events have had friends, family members and employees who were directly impacted by the storm,” said Jay Goldberg of Jay Goldberg Events and Entertainment.

City of Bloomington Manager David Hales said, “The City of Bloomington has heavy hearts for those affected in the recent tornado outbreaks around Central Illinois. We know that our city and surrounding cities will pull together to help out and support this cause. We are glad to be hosting this benefit concert in our city.”

“We are honored and excited to be hosting this benefit concert. We are passionate about our business and know this is the best way that we could help out. Everyone involved in putting on this concert has dropped everything to make this happen, and we are looking forward to a very successful event to help those that need it,” said John Butler, President of Central Illinois Arena Management that operates the US Cellular Coliseum.

Rock to the Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, whose mission is to build strong, healthy communities through the support of grassroots organizations across the country. Rock to the Rescue originally started in 2001 as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and is the brainchild of STYX’s Tommy Shaw and REO SPEEDWAGON’s Kevin Cronin. The two musicians brought together bands and artists such as Bad Company, Journey, Survivor, Kansas, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many others to be part of “Volunteers For America” concert events in Dallas and Atlanta that ultimately raised over $775,000 for victims of 9/11, as well as the Port Authority police department in New York City. On the bands’ last tour together, the Midwest Rock N’ Roll Express, Rock to the Rescue not only raised thousands of dollars for local charities at each tour stop, but also raised $108,000 which went directly to the Boston One Fund, helping victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. STYX
Pier 6 Pavilion – Baltimore, MD
August 23, 2013
Review by Marcy J Royce

A beautiful warm evening in the port of Baltimore set the stage for one hell of a rock show. STYX was the main attraction with special guests REO SPEEDWAGON. These two veteran groups have been touring together at times for years yet this was the first time I’ve been able to attend the grand show. As I passed through the entrance I began to notice the main age group for this show. Surprisingly my age and at least 20 years older. Very cool! These bands still can draw a large crowd following and that makes me happy because many of the bands from the 80’s are still viable and can tour well.

It wasn’t long before I needed to prepare myself to photograph REO SPEEDWAGON. Their set was a perfect blend of the numerous radio hits they have built their reputation upon. The crowd was really into their set and sang along with most every song. I was pleased to photograph them.

Next up was the mighty STYX. I was very anxious to capture Tommy Shaw and James Young. But I want to tell you, all members were very interactive with the photogs this night as well as the fans. You knew exactly that they were looking at you and smiling, almost as if they were silently thanking you for being there at the show. Believe me, I was honored to be there. The set kicked off with Blue Collar Man, proving to be a crowd favorite from the get go. Then up a notch we went with Grand Illusion. Holy cow, what a start. The last song I photographed was Fooling Yourself. As the song neared the end, I took in the stage and the lighting one last time close up. Great setup with the LED screens that also provided a nice catwalk for the guys above the backline. Very nice. I collected my gear and made my way to the outside of the pavilion. This is when I really recognized and made a huge mental note to myself to include here just how clean, clear, and crisp the sound was. Each member was mixed perfectly and that is delightful. There are too many bands out there today that have poor mixes and crowd penetration. Kudos to the sound engineering for bring these guys out to the fullest potential of the venue. So, not only were STYX presented well via the audio, the lighting was spot on. I’m a visual person, and I really could appreciate as a fan the way everyone on stage was given great coverage. This also makes for better photos for me.

I took in each and every song, bit by bit. My favorite of the night came just before the encore; Too Much Time On My Hands. The crowd from the Pavilion to the lawn was totally engulfed and engaged. When the crowd blinder lights came on you could see the fans well and many hands were in the air and many were singing along at the top of their lungs. So great to see that years of appreciation for the band and their music was returned to them this night in Baltimore.

One of the biggest highlights for me was Lawrence Gowan. WOW! Energy, enthusiasm, charisma, and strong presence made for quite the show. I found myself fixated many times on him. Love his full 180 degree keyboard. Close but not far behind was Tommy Shaw. Man, can that guy belt them out with precision and sound as great today as he did years ago. This is what it should be like for most lead vocals. Glad to see that Tommy takes care of his voice so well. And a depressing side note though: I didn’t stick around long enough after the show outside with other media friends and I TOTALLY MISSED Tommy coming out to meet and greet. My uber large loss. It would have been fantastic to have met him. Next time? And I do hope there is a next time!

Kudos to the great performance of STYX!

STYX consists of Chuck Panozzo (guest at shows on Bass), James Young (Guitar), Tommy Shaw (Guitar, Lead Vocals), Todd Sucherman (Drums), Lawrence Gowan (Keyboard, Lead Vocals), and Ricky Phillips (Bass).

STYX and REO Speedwagon’s Rock to the Rescue charity organization not only raised thousands of dollars for local charities at each tour stop, but they also raised $108,000 which will go directly to the Boston One Fund, helping victims of the Boston marathon bombings.

Donations were collected along the 21-date trek when fans purchased a silent raffle ticket to win a guitar signed by all three acts.

“Like all Americans, we have watched the events in Boston and wondered what we could do to help. We know the fans of all three bands will once again rise with us to help our friends in Boston. We Are Boston!”STYX

“We feel such sadness for those innocent people in Boston who have suffered so much and are still suffering now. We think of those victims of senseless violence as we sign the guitar which is to be donated on their behalf each night. In our small way, we do what we do.”REO Speedwagon

“The Nugent band and family are surrounded by Americans who care deeply about each other and are dedicated to give all we got in times of need. We again face a tragedy that we can all help with, and are proud of this charitable heart and soul effort.” Ted Nugent

Styx, REO and the Motor City Madman: there aren’t enough expletives in my vocabulary to explain how great this is…but I’ll try. This is going to be *$@&#@*&@# awesome!”James “JY” Young, Styx (guitars, vocals)

“Yo, wake up everybody! Winter is over, the snow is melting, the sun is coming out–it’s time for the second annual REO, Styx, Nugent springtime extravaganza. We had so much fun in 2012 we all decided to fire this ‘Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express’ thing up and do it again. Time to strap on our six strings, pack up the trucks and tour buses, get together with our best rock buddies and go out to have some big fun. See y’all soon.”Kevin Cronin, REO Speedwagon (vocals, guitars, keyboards)

“Blazing vocal melodies and guitars, soaring arrangements steeped in Progressive Rock roots, heart touching ballads you know in your bones, and that’s just my DAMN YANKEES brother TED NUGENT I’m talking about! Wait until STYX and REO take the stage! You might need to take the next day off after riding this glorious train!”Tommy Shaw, Styx (vocals, guitars)

“When you live the ultimate American guitar player’s dream, with the ultimate grinding band, performing the most intense fun songs in the world to the most enthusiastic audiences alive, every tour and every concert is an indescribable celebration. Styx and REO deserve me. Here we come again baby, like dogs in heat!”Ted Nugent

nugent2013“The Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express” tour racked in rave reviews during its debut run, including:

“Tuesday’s lineup of Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and Styx brought album-oriented rock to a rabid, near sold-out audience that ate up every lick, groove and wail like it was manna from heaven.”
– Candace Horgan, Denver Post

“The ‘Midwest Rock ‘N Roll Express’ tour proved to be aptly named and by the time the last guitar pick had been thrown and the final encore had faded away, it’s likely that more than a few in the audience were pulling out their smartphones to look for their chance to stow away as passengers to catch the next stop.”
–Matt Wardlaw, Ultimateclassicrock.com

“One would be hard pressed to find a tour line-up that can boast more combined top 40 hits and platinum recordings than that of Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and STYX…on this night, (the fans are) going to get their money’s worth.”
–Craig Ross, Guitarinternational.com

There’s no slowing down for STYX (@STYXtheband), whose on-going U.S. tour continues through the rest of the year, with even more shows being added frequently to their already hectic schedule. Dates for 2013 are already in the works and will be announced soon.

The band will be performing a pair of extra special shows in Las Vegas, NV at The Pearl at Palms Casino Resort on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17. Fans west of the Mississippi will finally have their chance to witness the critically-acclaimed performances of 1977′s THE GRAND ILLUSION and 1978′s PIECES OF EIGHT in their entirety, along with other classic hits. Both albums spawned such hit singles and Classic Rock radio standards as “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).” Tickets for both shows can be purchased here: www.palms.com/events/styx. Doors at The Pearl will open at 7:00 PM and show time is 8:00 PM.

Back when “THE GRAND ILLUSION/PIECES OF EIGHT” tour originally took place October and November 2010, singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw had proclaimed: “This is the most unique STYX concert ever. It’s a hybrid experience of enjoying the artistry of the vinyl album and the energy and of our live performance. Some songs have never been performed live!”

Special one-time-only surprises usually happen at the end of a long tour. The final stop in Bangor, ME last Sunday, July 8 of “The Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express” with STYX, REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent was no exception. During STYX’s set, lucky fans at that final stop got what they were hoping for when Ted Nugent joined the band for a special performance of the Damn Yankees classic “Coming Of Age.”

As STYX’s Tommy Shaw declared, “Working with Brother Ted has been a real treat. Joining fellow Nugent alumni Dave Amato (REO Speedwagon guitarist) in the wings on a regular basis to watch Ted, Derek (St. Homes), Greg (Smith) and Mick (Brown) craft the perfect set for our collective audience. Night after night, it has been inspirational. Then, to finish the tour with Ted joining STYX on stage for a killer performance of ‘Coming of Age’ caught me off-guard how powerful it was. I swear Nugent was levitating. Damn Yankee brothers forever.

From the Bangor Daily News:

The drummer for musician Ted Nugent is facing multiple charges after police say he drunkenly stole a golf cart after the band’s show on the Bangor waterfront Sunday, according to police.

Bangor police Officers Steve Jordan and Jim Dearing were working at the waterfront pavillion during Sunday’s show featuring Styx, REO Speedwagon and Nugent when security alerted them to an issue behind the stage, according to a news release from Sgt. Paul Edwards.

Police were alerted that Mick Brown, 55, who is Nugent’s drummer, had stolen a golf cart used by Waterfront Concerts staff and was drunkenly driving it around the Front Street area at about 9:45 p.m., according to Edwards.

Several people had attempted to stop Brown, but he had sped away down the foot path near the Sea Dog, the sergeant said. Jordan later observed the cart with two females on board near the Railroad Street crossing, and attempted to stop Brown, again without success.

After Brown had accelerated past Jordan, Edwards said a security officer got close enough to stop him, but Brown gave the officer a shove. Two other security team members removed Brown from the cart physically and he was placed under arrest.

Brown was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and booked on charges of operating under the influence, driving to endanger, theft and assault. He was later released on $4,000 bail.

Brown is due in court Aug. 15.

The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight Live Blu Ray

Eagle Rock Entertainment

8 out of 10

STYX puts on one hell of a live show. They have more hits than you might think, and when they do a standard ‘greatest hits’ show, you are blown away not only by how many hits they’ve had, but by the sheer musicianship and epic songwriting skills the Chicago Prog Rock band has. Yes I said Prog Rock. They may not be as spacey as Pink Floyd or as intricate as Rush, but they were one of the greatest Prog Rock bands of the 70’s.

The Grand Illusion was released in 1977 and is still their best selling album (according to them). The songwriting on this opus ranges from grandiose and bombastic to sheer brilliance. The opening title track The Grand Illusion shows off their writing skills as much as it does their musicianship and it is one hell of a way to open an album let alone a live show. Flowing right into Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) the crowd is on their feet rocking out and transported back to a time where huge epic songs ruled the airwaves and the charts.

The show starts out with a video screen showing an homage to the Star Wars opening in space with the yellow letters taking us back to 1977. It then cuts to a young man’s bedroom where he is shuffling through his stack of LPs (you remember those right? Vinyl baby, old school!), until he finds The Grand Illusion. He puts it on the turn table, grabs his head phones, and the band kick into the intro to The Grand Illusion.

The hits just keep on coming with Come Sail Away and Miss America. With Castle Walls being an amazing stand out live, you tend to forget what an incredible album The Grand Illusion was from beginning to end until it is right there in your face.

After a short intermission, we go back to the video and the young man putting Pieces Of Eight on. The second half of the concert is really for the old school STYX fans. While Pieces Of Eight has its hits like Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) and the perennial Renegade, the rest of the album may not be as familiar to the radio fans of STYX.

STYX released Pieces Of Eight in 1978 marking a very prolific time in the history of STYX. Once The Grand Illusion took off, it rocketed the band from the clubs, to opening for KANSAS, to headlining Arenas before they took a short break to record and release Pieces Of Eight.

I’ve seen STYX live at least 5 times over as many years, though I missed this particular tour unfortunately. They are consummate musicians and throw a great party when they are on stage. And to take two albums, dust off songs that they have never played live before, and put them out there thirty some odd years later, and be as entertaining as they are is no mean feat.

The music comes across great in this Blu Ray release and the surround sound will give you goose bumps at times when they go into Castle Walls, Renegade, or Miss America. The camera work was a little annoying however, in that every third shot was out of focus! At first I thought I was imagining it, and then I thought maybe they were trying to be artsy with it. Then I realized, the camera men were simply shooting it out of focus most of the time. Other than the video editing and camera work, it is definitely a must have for the hard core STYX fans. And if you are only a radio fan of STYX, this is a great place to start to learn more about them, where their music came from, and why 30 plus years later they are STILL all over Classic Rock stations around the world.
