THE FIFTH Confessions Of Man
Independent Release
Rating: 9 Out Of 10
Reviewed by: Bam-Bam

While N.C.’s THE FIFTH are not newcomers to the scene, this latest version of the band is by far the finest we’ve seen and heard. With former 90’s sensation Roy Cathey (COLD SWEAT) combining his vocal aeronautics with MR. BLACKWELL drummer Marc Anthony, ex-SLAVEMACHINE guitarist Icky Jim and the bottom-heavy bass talents of B-Man, the band has NEVER sounded so hot! Proof and judgment is their latest release, Confessions Of Man a romping Modern Hard Rock drive of eight heavy fist-shakers and two slower-tempo offerings. Of the ten tracks total, this scribe’s favorites, by far, are the first single and lead-off track “The Gift (Take It Back)”, the grinding and naughty “Dirty Money” and the gritty, moving story about a sex-laden night on the town “Burn”. Only one fishy track out of the bunch for me, that being the cookie-cutter, CREED-ish “One More Day”. While the track doesn’t flat-out suck, I much prefer THE FIFTH doing their own thing rather than canning one for an audience that doesn’t really matter in the scheme of things (radio whores!).

Throughout the entire effort, Cathey’s vocals are at their prime, Icky Jim lifts the tracks to their fullest potential with ripping leads, and Anthony’s drumming is solid, playful and driving against B-Man’s nasty locker room filth bass rumble. At press-time, the band has announced that they were recently signed to EMG/Universal which I imagine will finally put these talented rockers in more hands than local touring and hard slugs at hometown radio stations. I sincerely hope they get their grab because they’re ready and totally able to keep up the pace. A definite band to watch out for in 2009!!!
