First off, I have to say that this band completely grabbed me with its name, album cover and album name. I mean come on, Telling on Trixie is a cool-ass name for a band! Secondly, the album cover is hilarious...and I might know that lady! And last, any album titled Ugly, Broke & Sober is one I can’t help but give a listen to! Then, reading the pr sheet made Telling on Trixie an even more compelling band! These five New York rockers: lead singer Derek Nicoletto, guitarist Brad Small, new lead guitarist Tommy Kessler, bassist Tom Welsch, and drummer Andrew Frawley teamed with their fans to make Ugly, Broke & Sober. Basically, the band raised money through their fan-supported website, and then gave their investors full input through the making of the album. So, $20,000 later, Telling on Trixie recorded and produced Ugly, Broke & Sober themselves (except for three songs produced by Jamie Siegel (Lauren Hill, Taking Back Sunday, Joss Stone). The first thing you notice about the music is Derek Nicoletto’s vocals. His voice is unique and very much a crucial part of the music that this band makes! Then you notice the smoothness of the band as a unit...they’re tight...very cohesive. The music is velvety...rich and luxurious. Full of personal tales, chameleon-like guitars, luxurious vocals and subtly forceful tempos, Ugly, Broke & Sober is a breath of fresh air in a stale room! Fans of Collective Soul, Tonic, and Goo Goo Dolls will find something to dig in Telling on Trixie! Favorite tunes include “A.N.F.O,” “Shooting in 60”, “Mad About You” (a cool cover of the Belinda Carlisle classic), and “Crash Me Up.” This band is so compelling...from its story to this album! Well worth a listen, this album is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
