CD: MOLLY HATCHET Warriors of the Rainbow Bridge
|
SPV Recordings Rating: 9 Out Of 10 - Reviewed by Larissa Rose
Molly Hatchet is back with a new album, and it could prove to be their best, if not toughest sounding yet. Not at all what you’d expect with the title Warriors of the Rainbow Bridge. The album name, however, has deep meaning, chosen in memory of guitarist Bobby Ingram’s late wife, Stephanie, who has “crossed the rainbow bridge, the bridge to heaven.” For this effort, the band has their old guitarist, Dave Hlubek back, along with former Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Tim Lindsey. The album kicks off with “Son of the South,” destined to be ranked up there with “Sweet Home Alabama” as a classic Southen rock anthem. “Moonlight Dancing on the Bayou” and “I’m Ready for You” maintain the hammering rock beat, but then “Roadhouse Boogie” comes along with a slower beat, then jumps into a more energetic chorus. The next few songs continue to showcase the extraordinary guitar shredding and drum hammering that fans have come to expect from Molly Hatchet, while “Gone in Sixty Seconds” takes on a more ’80s rock feel, leading off with an AC/DC sounding guitar riff. The final track, “Rainbow Bridge,” is nothing but raw emotion, a tribute to Ingram, that starts off slow, but after the first three minutes turns into an all out jam session, with unrestrained guitars, keyboards and a quick, rock beat. My favorite track ended up being “Hell Has no Fury” (like a woman scorned), with classic rock guitars and beat, with a Skynyrdesque piano thrown in for good measure. Overall, a hugely successful effort by the 25-year veterans/legends, and I suggest you get your hands on a copy. The album hits stores May 24, and the band is on tour now.
