Away-Team’s In-Depth Interview With Singer JAMES HART
It cracks me up to read band bios where they profess, “With the band’s untimely break-up…” and then proceed to list 100 different reasons as to why they woulda-coulda-shoulda made it, IF ONLY, they’d stayed together. I won’t lie…I think it’s downright hilarious. I mean, I’m sure that me and a few ex-girlfriends could have made pretty babies…IF ONLY…!!! You get what I’m saying. It’s so refreshing when you run into a musician as talented as singer James Hart, who was the frontman for the famed Orange County, California rockers 18 VISIONS until their “untimely” break-up in 2007. What did he do? He wasted no time and went and recorded a killer album in a total butt-shakin’, head-slammin’, Rock-N-Roll style…landed a major label record deal…lost said label deal when a shift in A&R occurred…and pressed forward and released it anyway!!! Now, the guy is having the time of his life with a huge radio hit in “Dirty Little Girl” (from BURN HALO’s latest self-titled debut), touring his ass off in support, and has found a little time to call Away-Team’s Bam-Bam for a little chat while sitting in the back of a van on the way to Tulsa, Oklahoma! Sorry, folks, it doesn’t get any cooler than this, so sit back and get ready to take in one of the most honest and intelligent takes on the music industry and a band’s rise to fame that we’ve ever conducted.
Green Day has just premiered the video for their new single, "21 Guns," exclusively on MySpace Music. The video was helmed by noted director Marc Webb, who has lensed clips for such artists as My Chemical Romance, Weezer, and All-American Rejects, and is making his feature film directorial debut in July with (500) Days of Summer.
The Used are pleased to announce their first single, “Blood On My Hands” is on sale now at iTunes and www.TheUsed.net. The track, from their upcoming album Artwork, which guitarist Quinn Allman describes as the song that “sums up everything about The Used,” is confined chaos, brutally thrashing one moment and proffering a pop-driven, sing-along chorus the next.

What Is Happening With LINKIN PARK In The Meantime???
LINKIN PARK is currently dominating Rock radio once again with "New Divide," their single from Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen. Mike Shinoda told MTV News that "early next year there's going to be another Linkin Park record too. We've been writing a lot and all the stuff we've been experiencing and stuff we've seen — that stuff is all going into the songs. Over the next year or so, you're going to get a lot of different LP music, and I think you're going to get a lot of takes on everything that's been going on."
LINKIN PARK singer Chester Bennington will also release his long-in-the-works side project, DEAD BY SUNRISE, in September. Bennington says of the record, "There's a stylistic thing that's different. With Linkin Park, we have a signature sound — you know it when you hear us. [Dead By Sunrise] does not have that feel. It has a completely different feel. Trying to describe that difference is like trying to describe the difference between Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, you know? They're both rock, but they're different styles. I'm confident in saying this next record is going to be the most challenging... and complex and intriguing music that has come out of the Linkin Park camp. It's really dark. It's like post-apocalyptic Blade Runner meets LSD."
"I have to say, I'm really proud of Chester — he has his own style. You know how they say you can turn on Pink Floyd and The Wizard of Oz and they go together?" Shinoda told MTV."You'll want to put this record on with Blade Runner and Tron." "Or Blade Runner and Tron and A Clockwork Orange, all at the same time,"Bennington joked.
As for the next proper LINKIN PARK record, Bennington says, "With working on Minutes To Midnight, we really broke out of our shell — we really discovered that we can lose our minds in our music, and we're going to keep going with that for this new one. We're all creative in a lot of different ways. If you have more than one thing you're good at, or you have more than one style of doing one thing in particular, it helps keep the creativity fresh and new and keeps things rolling in a positive direction. If I was Bob Ross and I painted a forest scene every day, I'd get really good at painting a forest scene, but I don't know if I'd be very good at doing anything else." Full story...

However, the group notes that the songs for Eros "will see the light of day at some point." As for the state of bassist Chi Cheng, who remains in a coma, the DEFTONES note that "he continues to get hospital care, but often it feels as if we’re no closer to knowing what is ultimately going to happen to him as he continues to fight off infections as part of an ongoing battle with his condition." The band is planning a benefit concert for him in Los Angeles later this year. Full story...

R-N-R Hall Of Famers Speak About Jackson’s Untimely Death!
Legendary producers and recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees KENNY GAMBLE and LEON HUFF,who brought Philadelphia soul music ("The Sound of Philadelphia") to "people all over the world” and recorded two albums with the Jacksons, said this morning they are “extremely saddened by the sudden death of our dear friend Michael Jackson.”
“Michael was a great and wonderful artist and performer,” said Gamble and Huff in a joint statement. “We were privileged and honored to record him and his brothers here at Philadelphia International Records.”
The Jacksons recorded their first two albums after leaving Motown in Philadelphia with Gamble and Huff songs and the Philadelphia International production crew. When the Jacksons came to PIR, they were transitioning away from the brand name of the Jackson Five. In 1976 and 1977, Gamble and Huff produced and co-wrote songs for the albums The Jacksons and Going Places, as part of a double imprint deal with CBS/Epic Records, the Jacksons’ new label. Several hit songs came out of that production effort, including "Enjoy Yourself" and "Let Me Show You the Way to Go."
During those recording sessions, Michael Jackson paid close attention to the production and songwriting techniques of Gamble and Huff, and learned from those observations to create his own mega-platinum recording career. Jackson also had the opportunity to work at that time with legendary Philadelphia International producers McFadden and Whitehead, Dexter Wansel and Bunny Sigler.
Several songs that Michael and his brothers particularly enjoyed recording with Gamble and Huff were "Man of War," which has much significance today, as well as the soulful "Blues Away" and romantic "Find Me a Girl":
Michael Jackson was recently quoted paying tribute to Gamble and Huff in a magazine article. "There was a message in their music that raised a social consciousness and political awareness without offending," Jackson said. "Theirs is a gift of genius and I love them."
“We are very honored to have been a part of Michael Jackson’s music and creative career in helping to write and produce his own music with his brothers,” Gamble and Huff continued this morning. “We know his music and legacy will live on for a very long time".
Gamble & Huff wrote over 3,000 songs with in 35 years, including R&B #1 hits, pop #1 hits, gold and platinum records, Grammy winners and BMI songwriters' awards honorees. Featured prominently in television programs ("The Apprentice"), films ("The Nutty Professor") and advertising spots (Verizon, Old Navy, The Gap) for more than 30 years, Gamble and Huff's songs have entered the musical DNA of contemporary culture. In fact, one of their songs is played on the radio somewhere in the world every 13.5 minutes. With a stable core of artists led by the O'Jays, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Billy Paul, MFSB and the Three Degrees, Gamble and Huff co-founded Philadelphia International Records and created monster hits almost from the first day of its inception. Songs they have written and produced together, like "Back Stabbers," "Love Train," "For The Love Of Money," "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "Cowboys to Girls," "Don't Leave Me This Way," "Enjoy Yourself," "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," "Only the Strong Survive" and "TSOP," have received songwriters' awards from Broadcast Music International (BMI). All told, the Gamble-Huff/PIR music machine" has generated over 100 Gold and Platinum records and over 70 #1 hits.
In 1999, four years after being inducted with Gamble into the National Academy of Songwriters' Hall of Fame, Huff was honored with his longtime partner by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences with the Trustees Award, for his extensive body of work, both as producer and songwriter, and his contribution to the entire fabric of popular music. Last year, Huff was inducted with Gamble into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Huff also has appeared on American Idol in a show devoted to his music, and with Gamble has been inducted twice into the Dance Music Hall of Fame and the R&B Hall of Fame. Full story...
When you think of Bay Area Thrash, you think of four bands; Metallica, Exodus, Testament, and Death Angel. Sure there were others of that time, and many that came later. But those four bands defined Thrash Metal and the ‘Bay Area’ sound. Naturally there were none bigger than Metallica, but close on their heels has to be Testament. After 24 years, numerous lineup changes, a throat cancer scare, and a nine year period of inactivity, Testament is back with a new album Formation of Damnation featuring Chuck Billy on vocals, Eric Peterson on guitar, Alex Skolnick on guitar, Greg Christian on bass, and Paul Bostaph on drums. A new tour that is taking the bands to markets they haven’t played in 15 years or more (I caught the show in Raleigh, NC, and there was much debate as to whether Testament had actually ever played Raleigh before). And a new focus and determination to take the band higher and farther than it has ever been before. I met with Alex Skolnick right before their set at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, and talked about Testament, Trans Siberian Orchestra, the Alex Skolnick Trio and life before and after Testament. Here we go….
Away-Team: This is Jim Keller with Alex Skolnick from Testament. Once again I want to thank you for sitting down and doing this interview with us, much appreciated.
Alex: Absolutely!
Away-Team: What I’d like to do basically is start at the beginning of the band.
Alex: Okay.
Away-Team: Testament was originally started as The Legacy..
Alex: Right…
Away-Team: By Eric (Peterson) and his cousin. They had Steve Souza in the band as a vocalist who left to join Exodus before you recorded your first album. It was reported that he actually suggested Chuck (Billy) as his replacement. Why did Steve leave?
Alex: Well it was funny ‘cause he was the guy that gave us all serious talking toos about how everybody in this band has to be serious. You know when I joined the band he’s like you’re either serious, you either take this seriously or you take it somewhere else. We don’t want guys that are just in here that are just gonna leave and join some other band. Sure enough *laughs* he’s the guy that ends up leaving. But you know he left because I think he felt Exodus was going farther, faster.
Away-Team: At that time when you joined, you were a student of Joe Satriani’s Correct?
Alex: Correct.
Away-Team: And after you joined the band did you continue practicing with him, learning from him?
Alex: I studied with him for about two years. I was with him, basically for the first six months I was in the band and then he started getting really busy. He did his first solo recordings. He definitely uh got me to learn a lot more on my own than I would have otherwise.
Away-Team: So, is it kind of a prerequisite that if you’re going to be in one of the better thrash bands out of San Francisco a la Testament, Metallica; you had to learn from Joe?

New Orleans, Louisiana's sons of Southern grindcore, SOILENT GREEN, are obviously making an impression over at Adult Swim. SOILENT GREEN has not only toured with the notorious masters of animated death metal, Dethklok, but have recently recorded the opening theme song to Squidbillies fourth season, which just kicked off on May 17th on Adult Swim.
Vocalist Ben Falgoust comments; “Squidbillies is the best cartoon…excuse me…show on TV/Internet/Cable around! I felt that way before we did the theme tracks and I feel even stronger about it since I've seen the new episodes, despite our involvement with the program, of course.
It was an awesome and strange experience to track these theme songs for the Squidbillies. It was pretty shocking when were contacted by them to be involved with this project. I give credit to the rest of the guys in the band for pulling it off from a strange but fun perspective in incorporating Soilent Green's style into the theme song for the show.”
New Episodes of Squidbillies Air Sunday nights at midnight (ET, PT), and don't forget to check out SOILENT GREEN's latest release Inevitable Collapse In The Presence Of Conviction available as CD, limited special edition vinyl, and digital download. In other news, SOILENT GREEN are confirmed to play on the Terrorizer stage at this year's Hellfest in France.

Our friends at Nuclear Blast and Metal Blade Records just hit us up with this press release on some illegal activity going on in the way of contracts and empty promises getting doled out across the music world again. Read and be careful…
You’re an unsigned band playing a local show and someone approaches you claiming to represent Nuclear Blast or Metal Blade Records. They say they want to sign you, book studio time for your band, buy you plane tickets, or even put you on Ozzfest, yet no contracts are ever involved. Sound too good to be true? That’s because it is.
There’s been a rash of imposters in several states claiming all of the above and more. Some try to extort money from bands by claiming they need it to place a deposit on whatever it is they’re promising. Others want free entry into a show, free CDs & band merchandise, or backstage access. Whatever the case, what’s clear is that these imposters have such low-self esteem that they’re willing to lie about who they are.
Bands, DO NOT LET YOUR HOPES OF GETTING SIGNED BLINDSIDE YOU. The Staff members at Nuclear Blast and Metal Blade:
• conduct official business via their official office e-mail & telephone number. • can produce a business card with the label’s logo, official office address, and official telephone number. • NEVER ask unsigned bands for “deposit” money.
Nuclear Blast and Metal Blade Records wish to keep their reputations among metal fans & metal musicians in good standing, as we understand how hard bands work to bring their music to the metal community. These imposters are mocking everything we stand for as independent metal labels, as musicians, and as fans.
If ANYONE approaches your band claiming to be from a label and asks for money, for free entry into a show, free CDs or merchandise, or backstage access, your FIRST response should be to be skeptical.
Call the label asking to verify staff names and positions. Or, take your photo with the imposter/impersonator and send it to the label’s general e-mail address to inform them of what they are promising.
Nuclear Blast’s general e-mail address is: (Click Here)

Behind the Scenes with PAPA ROACH
Take a behind the scenes look at PAPA ROACH's upcoming video for "I Almost Told You That I Love You." SHOCKING is an understatement!
Slim Jim Keller caught up with famed EXODUS drummer Tom Hunting recently while on tour with KREATOR. The two talked about how metal needed to be killed in the 90's, the New Wave of American Thrash Metal revival and Tom's Bluegrass side project Coffin Hunter!
1986 was the year I first heard of Exodus and their debut album Bonded By Blood. It was yet another turning point in what would be the defining sound of Bay Area Thrash (as it would soon be called). The local High School radio station in Concord, Ca was all metal, all the time (well until 10pm when it had to shut down because it was run by high school students), and this station would become key to my submersion into all things Metal. Bonded By Blood was played endlessly on the station and the cassette never left my car stereo for long.
